Fellowship in Administration & Physician Leadership

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to offer a new Administration and Physician Leadership Fellowship.  The fellowship is a one-year post-graduate, non-ACGME accredited training program. Emergency Department leadership is complex, and Emergency Medicine physicians play key roles in many hospital leadership efforts.  This fellowship will provide emergency physicians with the knowledge and skills to become effective leaders and managers. 


Academic Program

Our program begins with the creation of a mentoring committee, tailored to the fellow's career direction, comprised of emergency medicine faculty with current roles in hospital leadership, health plan administration, regional emergency health care administration, and academic administration. 

The following curricular topics are covered though the fellowship program, including through the longitudinal project research, mentor meetings, and committee participation.

Organizational Management

  • Billing, coding, and compliance
  • Budgets and compensation
  • Physician recruitment and retention
  • Physician performance measurement and improvement
  • Credentialing and delineation of privileges including professional practice evaluation
  • Organizational leadership (physician group, hospital, school of medicine)
  • Integrated delivery and finance systems

Emergency Department Management

  • ED leadership roles and responsibilities
  • Effective communication and team building
  • Physician peer support and coaching
  • Staffing and scheduling
  • Patient experience, patient relations, and conflict resolution
  • Patient safety and quality improvement
  • ED flow and efficiency
  • Resource utilization
  • Planning for mass casualty incidents
  • EMTALA and other regulatory requirements
  • JCAHO and special ED designations

Training Programs

UPMC Physician Leadership Essentials Program

  • 36-hour program presented during six 6-hours sessions (bimonthly)

ACEP ED Directors Academy Phase 1

  • 30-hour program covering ED leadership essentials.

UPMC Physicians for Physicians Peer Support Training

  • 3-hour training session covering basic crisis intervention, support and coping skills

Optional Programs

  • Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)
  • 18-hour self-paced program for Basic Certificate in Quality and Patient Safety
  • ACEP Reimbursement and Coding
Committee Participation and Meeting Attendance

The fellow will participate with the following committees and meetings:

  • Emergency Medicine Quality and Patient Safety (quarterly)
  • System-wide ED Advisory Committee (quarterly)
  • Local ED leadership and faculty meetings at two sites (monthly)
  • Residency PSQI educational sessions (monthly)
  • Participate as faculty with residency education related to physician leadership

As appropriate to interest and longitudinal project:

  • Medical Staff meetings (Credentials, Professional Practice, Medical Executive Committee)
  • Hospital Committees (Patient Safety, Quality Cabinets, Trauma Medical Advisory, Stroke Leadership)
  • Regional/state/national committee (EMS, Trauma, Pennsylvania ACEP committee, SAEM Operations Interest group, ACEP committee)
Longitudinal Project

The fellow will complete at least one mentored project anticipated to result in a formal presentation or abstract as well as a written work of publishable quality.

Clinical Opportunities

The fellow will work a total of 1000 annual hours (approximately 10 shifts/month) in two UPMC Emergency Departments: one tertiary/academic site and one community site.  The fellow will receive an annual salary of $157,000.  Moonlighting options may also be available at the discretion of the fellowship director.


Application Requirements and Process

Our program is available to one highly qualified applicant each year.  Applicants must have completed a residency in Emergency Medicine and be board certified or board eligible at the time of entry into the fellowship.
