UPMC Presbyterian Hospital

Located in the heart of Oakland, UPMC Presbyterian is a major adult tertiary care hospital and academic medical center. Known locally as “Presby”, UPMC Presbyterian supports residencies in all major specialties, and provides a full range of adult inpatient medical and surgical services, including renowned specialty programs in transplantation, cardiology, neurosciences, occupational and environmental health, geriatrics, and genetics.

The UPMC Presbyterian Emergency Department sees more than 55,000 patients each year and is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center. The ED receives urgent referrals from a large portion of western Pennsylvania and the surrounding regions of West Virginia, eastern Ohio, and western Maryland. As part of the UPMC Stroke Institute, the UPMC Presbyterian ED is certified by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Residents rotate in the ED, neurovascular and neurotrauma ICUs, surgical ICU, transplant ICU, and with the trauma service.

UPMC Mercy Hospital

Founded as Mercy Hospital by the Sisters of Mercy in 1848, Mercy was Pittsburgh’s first hospital and the first Mercy Hospital in the world.  In 2008, the institution merged with UPMC and was renamed UPMC Mercy. Today, with 404 acute care beds, Mercy is the region's largest faith-based acute-care academic and research hospital.

The UPMC Mercy Emergency Department sees more than 67,000 patients each year and is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center. UPMC Mercy also features an American Burn Association-verified Burn Center and is the only hospital within Western Pennsylvania that provides Level 1 trauma and burn care.  The ED contains a 24-hour emergency psychiatric evaluation and treatment center and is designated by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. Residents rotate in the ED as well as the ICU and trauma units.

UPMC Shadyside Hospital

UPMC Shadyside had its beginnings in 1866 as the “Homeopathic Medical and Surgical Hospital and Dispensary” in downtown Pittsburgh. The hospital moved to the Shadyside section of the city in 1910 and became part of UPMC in 1997. UPMC Shadyside is a 520-bed tertiary care hospital that offers a broad range of specialties including cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, geriatrics, vascular medicine, and endocrinology.

The UPMC Shadyside Emergency Department sees more than 50,000 patients each year. The ED partners with colleagues in cardiology, palliative care, case management and primary care to create pathways for patients to receive rapid diagnostics, appropriate follow-up, and necessary support for at-home care. Shadyside’s ED is the primary referral site for hematologic and oncologic emergencies. Residents rotate in Shadyside's emergency department and on the hospital’s large critical care service.

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

Known locally as “Children’s”, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh serves as the region's pediatric referral facility and Western Pennsylvania's only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.  From Ambulatory Care to Transplantation and Cardiac Care, the hospital’s talented and committed pediatric experts care for infants, children, and adolescents who each year make more than 1,000,000 visits to Children’s, its many neighborhood locations, and Children's Community Pediatrics practices.

The Emergency Department at UPMC Children’s evaluates and manages over 80,000 children each year. Staffed by pediatric emergency medicine specialists and functioning as a home base for a 3-year pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program, the state-of-the-art ED includes trauma bays, critical care rooms, orthopedic procedure rooms, and a Fast Track area where less acute illnesses and injuries are evaluated and treated. Residents spend over four months of their training in the Children’s Emergency Department, which is the busiest of all those affiliated with the residency.

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is a major center for both women’s health and comprehensive medical-surgical care. Nearly 11,000 babies are born at Magee each year, accounting for 45 percent of all births in Allegheny County. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the largest in Pennsylvania and one of the largest in the country, treats more than 1,500 seriously or critically ill babies each year. Magee offers additional services for adults, including geriatrics and bariatric surgery. Magee has partnered with the UPMC Stroke Institute to implement a stroke telemedicine system to help assess potential stroke patients and deliver timely treatments.

The UPMC Magee-Womens Emergency Department sees more than 25,000 patients each year. Residents rotate on the Labor and Deliver Service as well as in the Emergency Department during the first year of residency.

St. Clair Hospital

St. Clair Hospital is an independent, 329-bed acute care facility that provides advanced, high-quality care to the residents of southwestern Pennsylvania. The hospital’s main campus is located just a few miles from downtown Pittsburgh.

The hospital features a 30,000 square foot emergency room which treats more than 60,000 patients a year. Residents spend one month working at St. Clair during their third year of residency.
