Clinical Training

The fellows are on-call approximately 6-8 times per month. While on call, fellows are responsible for admitting, consulting and managing patients on the service and fielding telephone calls from the Pittsburgh Poison Center. Every morning, daily rounds are also coordinated by the fellows. The medical toxicology service has a large number of rotators including residents, medical students, and pharmacists. Therefore, morning rounds are great opportunities for fellows to teach rotators at the bedside.

The Medical Toxicology Division also treats patients with addiction.  Fellows, therefore, treat inpatient addiction medicine patients to learn the nuances of treating addiction and withdrawal. Depending upon a fellow’s level of interest, additional addiction medicine opportunities are available. All fellows obtain their buprenorphine waiver, and motivational interview training in order to compliment patient care.
